Coaching Courses
South Carolina High School Rugby & the Men's Rugby Club at the University of South Carolina are proud to be the hosts of an upcoming USAR Coaches' Clinic in Columbia, SC on November 22 & 23. The event will be held at USC's Strom Thurmond Wellness & Fitness Center and adjacent fields.
This will be a perfect opportunity for coaches who obtained accreditation under the "Coach Accreditation Program" (CAP) as it expired in August of this year. It will also serve to benefit those at the High School and Collegiate levels who require additional training or an initial certification for the coming season.
To begin registration, please log on to http://usarugby.learn.com and follow the instructions listed in the attachment above.
Both the Introduction and Player Development courses will be offered. The Introduction course caters more towards high school and beginners, while the Development course caters more towards collegiate and All-Star caliber. Participants may only register for one class, so be sure to choose the one that best fits your current needs.
If you have any questions towards this process, please email them to James Farrar at Gamecockwon@aol.com I look forward to hearing from you as we prepare for another year of Rugby in South Carolina!

Experimental Law Variations
The IRB has sanctioned the trial of the ELVs at all levels of the game with effect from the 1st of August 2008 for a period of twelve months. A review of the Experiment will commence in March 2009 and following meetings in July of 2009 some of these laws may, or may not, be adopted into the game commencing in August of 2009.
Our governing body, USA Rugby has adopted the ELV’s as presented by the IRB and all of our games for the coming season will be played following these variations. However, you should note that USA Rugby has not adopted the variations as they concern the Maul at ages Under 19 and below due to safety concerns.
One important note for those of you that have been watching the Super 14 and games from the Southern Hemisphere since February is that the IRB and therefore USA Rugby has NOT adopted the variations as played there between February and August. These included additional variations, including the “short arm penalty”, and there are differences that could be misleading so please do not take those games as examples. The Guinness Premiership Commences in September and will better represent the ELVs.
As an additional aid please refer to the IRB’s video explanation that is available on Youtube at
